What does it take to make a house….your home?
What is a dream home really?
That would depend on your point of view.
To some it would be a Taj Mahal, New York high living, South Beach Deco
or wide open spaces. Whichever your
preference there are some things that outlast our ever changing styles and
happen to be standard issue for some folks.
We like our homes to be large enough to live but small
enough to keep in order. My favorite
kitchen incorporated the family room when we projected the table off the island
toward the TV. We would simply move the
sofa and chairs so that our guests felt they were included in the kitchen
affairs.
But the best thing
about this kitchen was the storage. You
know that thing that we can’t have enough of?
The two pantries each had 7 roll-outs (these were 102” tall). The bottom rollout was deeper to hold larger
quantities of stuff like cereal. oil, flour, etc. (we had four kids).
The countertop was
2” taller than normal, it was great!
Storage in the toe kicks allowed us a small step ladder, and storage for
linens and other flat items went in the toe kick drawers. Those kicks had push-in latches that popped
out when pushed with the toe of your shoe.
A 12” base cabinet close to the sink housed cleaning
supplies in a wire rack for easy access in case of spills.
And let’s not forget to pay
tribute to the Double Trash Pullout.
This hidden object has been the best idea since curtains
hung on counter tops.
For all that is said, your dream home is what you want it to
be. You will have to admit these few
items will make life easier and make your mark on the kitchen. Try installing some of these things in the bathroom, talk
about High Living. The bottom line is to
make room for your favorite conveniences and let everything else fall in place.
